How To Keep Your Teeth White After A Professional Whitening Treatment

Meta: If your teeth are stained or discolored, a professional whitening treatment from Dr. Abelar can remove some staining and discoloration.

Your “before” teeth may have been discolored and stained, but you just received the ultimate glow up with a professional whitening treatment from Dr. Abelar. But now what? You’ve got the beautiful smile you deserve, but how do you keep it as white and sparkly as the day you stepped out of the dentist’s chair? After all, whitening is an investment and you want to keep that investment safe. Here are some tips for keeping that dazzling smile following your professional whitening treatment!

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

You already brush your teeth and (hopefully!) floss them, too. Keep on keeping on with that routine. Make sure you brush at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day, preferably at bed time, or when you’re done eating for the day.

DON’T SMOKE

You know smoking is bad for your body, but it’s bad for your teeth for myriad reasons, too. Smoking can stain the teeth, so smoking after a whitening treatment can just deposit more stains on the teeth and put you back at square one.

If you smoke, please consider quitting, and beware that smoking may cause more stains down the road.

DON’T CONSUME STAINING FOODS

Dark foods that will stain a white shirt can stain teeth, too- especially foods like chocolate, red wine, and dark beverages like colas.

LIMIT ACIDIC FOODS

Acidic foods like certain sodas and citrus fruits and beverages can soften the enamel of your teeth, making them more porous, and thus susceptible to more stains. If you do consume acidic foods, a great rule of thumb is to follow your acidic food with a glass of water and wait 30 minutes for the enamel to re-harden before brushing. Brushing teeth with soft enamel can cause enamel damage.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

Whitening treatments aren’t permanent, and your whitened teeth do not resist staining like veneers would, so it’s important to care for your teeth to make your results last as long as possible.
