Tap Water May Be Unsafe For Cleaning CPAP Machines

We all lead busy lives, and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest health and wellness news. In fact, some things that are common knowledge to some of us might even come as a surprise to others, simply because they missed a news report. This can be said for the safety of tap water. Did you know that tap water can still contain bacteria that while totally fine for drinking, isn’t safe for inhalation?

It’s true. While our gastrointestinal system is set up to process such bacteria, often other areas of our body, including our sinuses and eyes, are not. That’s why optometrists recommend using contact lens solution to clean contact lenses instead of using tap water, and why in recent years doctors have told patients to stop using tap water when aerating sinuses. In fact, it’s recommended that you don’t use tap water in devices like humidifiers, either!

Now, a new warning has been issued about using tap water to clean CPAP devices for the same reason. Doctors now recommend you should use distilled or purified water to clean your CPAP machine, or to sterilize tap water by boiling for five minutes and then cooling.

If this seems complicated and time consuming, it’s because it kind of is. Using a CPAP machine already comes with a host of complications, including wearing an awkward and uncomfortable mask, using complicated electronics, requiring a power source, and lugging a clunky machine with you during travel excursions.

Thankfully there’s a much easier solution to CPAP therapy that is just as effective without the hassle. A custom sleep orthotic is much easier to care for (yes, it can be rinsed with tap water!) and is much more comfortable to wear. It works by positioning your mouth in such a way that your airway is naturally propped open, without the use of forced air.

This allows you to sleep more comfortably, without the cumbersome mask. Sleep orthotics do not require electricity either, so you’re not tethered to the wall as you sleep, and you can go virtually anywhere with it- even camping!

If you’re tired of the complications with your CPAP machine, contact Dr. Abelar’s office for a consultation for a sleep orthotic today!
