It was hard to miss the impact Starbucks’ limited-time Unicorn Frappuccino had on social media over the last few weeks. Surprisingly, critics argued not so much over the taste of the beverage but about its sugar content. Mixed in with all the vividly colored pictures of people trying out the new highly-anticipated drink, were graphics detailing just how much sugar the sweet treat contained. One of the most shared claims was that it had the equivalent to up to 3 or 4 Snickers candy bars in just one drink.
So, how much sugar was really in it?
According to the nutritional information listed on Starbucks’ website, the grande size, aka medium, Unicorn Frappuccino contained 59 grams of sugar.
Snickers’ website says one candy bar contains 27 grams of sugar.
So, a Unicorn Frappuccino is equivalent to about 2 Snickers bars, or 2.19 to be more exact.
What does this mean for your teeth?
Well, bacteria that naturally occurs in your mouth loves sugar even more than your taste buds do. When you consume something with lots of sugar, it creates a sort of an acid attack on your teeth when it mixes with the bacteria This acid destroys enamel and can eventually lead to cavities.
Dr. Abelar recommends rinsing your mouth with water after having a treat with lots of sugar in it and trying to limit those treats to only once in awhile.
