Sleep Apnea And Genetics

Our genes determine many things about us. Do you have blue eyes like your mother? Can you roll your tongue? Do you have an overbite or crossbite? All of these things can be caused by genetics! But while scientists are just beginning to understand the mysterious workings of genetics, there’s already a lot that we do know.

One of the remaining mysteries, however is whether or not conditions like sleep apnea are genetic. The truth is, sleep apnea can be caused by many things, including genetics. Here’s how.

In those with obstructive sleep apnea, there can be many causes. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing difficulty breathing that results in gasping for air, snoring, stopping and restarting breathing, and frequent waking. It can be caused by excess fat around the neck and a fatty tongue, but can also be cause by yes, you guessed it: genetics. Excess weight predisposition can be genetic, as can other, non-weight related issues that may cause obstructive sleep apnea, such as the shape and size of the airway, the shape of the face and neck, and more.

So how do you know the cause of your obstructive sleep apnea? You may not be able to determine that just yet, but the important thing is that no matter what is causing your sleep apnea, you get it treated. If you are overweight, work with your doctor to lose some of that excess weight. If you are a smoker, quitting smoking will also help your sleep apnea. If you are currently not treating your sleep apnea, speak to your doctor about your treatment options.

One popular treatment option for sleep apnea is a custom sleep orthotic device. These devices are available through Dr. Abelar, and are custom made to fit your individual mouth. They are very comfortable, and prop open the airway naturally, without the use of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, which many find akward and uncomfortable. Furthermore, sleep orthotics don’t require complicated machinery, tubing, or that notorious CPAP mask. They’re also easier to clean, and don’t require power to operate, so they’re perfect for travel.
