What is Neuromuscular Dentistry?
Neuromuscular dentistry is the treatment of chronic pain caused by problems with the temporomandibular joint or jaw joint and the surrounding structures. Dr. Abelar has specific post-graduate training in neuromuscular dentistry and brings a non-invasive approach to treating TMJ. He learned and also taught diagnosis and treatment of TMJ in neuromuscular courses at The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. And, Dr. Abelar is known as a leading practitioner of neuromuscular dentistry in San Diego.
In neuromuscular dentistry, the goal is to realign the temporomandibular joint without surgery or invasive treatments. When the temporomandibular joint is out of alignment, a wide range of pain and discomfort symptoms can occur. Trauma, injury or simply grinding teeth while you sleep, a condition known as bruxism, may cause the temporomandibular joint to become inflamed or go out of alignment. Resulting pain and discomfort is not localized to the jaw. Soft tissues, muscles and nerves may be affected that can cause a wide range of neck, shoulder, head and body aches. Chronic and persistent migraine headaches are also a common symptom of TMJ. With this wide range of symptoms, it is easy to see how a person might choose the wrong doctor to diagnose the problem. Frequently, doctors who examine the localized pain area can find no cause and simply prescribe pain medication. As a neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Abelar knows the symptoms of TMJ, and with specific diagnostic tests, can identify a solution and cure the problem, not just treat the symptom.
Rather than choosing painful, invasive surgery to realign the jaw, TMJ patients choose Dr. Abelar and neuromuscular dentistry for a long-term conservative fix for TMJ. Having practiced neuromuscular dentistry for more than a two decades in San Diego, Dr. Abelar has changed many lives by successfully eliminating the chronic pain of TMJ.
